iPhone: Using pinyin input, how do I type words that have a ü like 女?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 | FAQ

When using the iPhone pinyin input and you need to type a word that has a ü in it, for example 女 (nǚ), you use the v key. So you would type “nv” to lookup 女.

On a related note, the fastest and easiest way to type pinyin itself, with proper diacritical tone marks, on the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad is to use the app Pinyin Typist. It even has a dedicated button for typing “ü”, and a tone mark can be easily added to it with just the touch of another button.

Once you’ve typed some pinyin text in Pinyin Typist, you can copy it and paste it elsewhere, like another app. You can also email your pinyin text directly from the app. Snippets of pinyin text can also be saved for future use.

The App Store link is http://itunes.apple.com/app/pinyin-typist/id443069995?mt=8.

Full disclosure: I am the creator of Pinyin Typist. That said, I do sincerely believe that this app really is the best way to type pinyin with proper diacritical tone marks, on the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. I hope those who try it out will agree.]
